Spare-parts logistics, international transport, and warehouse operations require precise load planning to balance transport efficiency, delivery reliability, and cost control. With a highly diversified product portfolio and global customer base, Liebherr-Logistics GmbH has introduced a digital load planning tool to address growing complexity in container and truck loading.
Managing complexity in spare-parts logistics
Liebherr-Logistics manages nearly 150,000 different spare parts, resulting in a wide range of load carriers, packaging formats, and transport vehicle types. As shipment volumes and destination diversity increased, manual load space planning became increasingly time-intensive and limited in its ability to consistently optimize cargo utilization.
To improve efficiency, the company evaluated several digital planning solutions and selected a web-based load planning application designed to generate and visualize load plans for containers and trucks within minutes. The system enables planners to model different vehicle configurations and loading scenarios online, replacing manual planning steps.

Faster planning and improved space utilization
The digital tool allows load plans to be created, adjusted, and shared directly from the system, supporting collaboration between planning and loading teams. According to Liebherr-Logistics, planning time can be reduced by up to 90 percent compared with manual methods, while also improving the utilization of available cargo space.
The software’s configurability made it possible to adapt vehicle types and package parameters to Liebherr-Logistics’ specific operational requirements. This flexibility is particularly relevant for international shipments where container types and load constraints vary.
Operational results and cost impact
The system has been in trial operation for several months. A notable milestone was the planning and loading of a 40-foot container for shipment to Singapore in October 2025 using the new digital approach.
A comparison between manual and software-supported planning, based on average monthly truck dispatch volumes, indicates substantial efficiency gains. Based on these results, Liebherr-Logistics expects a five-figure cost reduction in 2026 driven by reduced planning effort and improved transport utilization.
Digital tools as a logistics efficiency driver
By integrating digital load planning into its logistics processes, Liebherr-Logistics is addressing both operational efficiency and cost transparency. The approach highlights how software-based planning tools can support scalable logistics operations in environments characterized by high product variety and global distribution requirements.
