3D Vision Inspection for Packaging Quality Control

Automated packaging inspection has become increasingly important in high-volume logistics and e-commerce fulfilment environments where incorrect box packing can lead to transit damage and returns. Inline 3D vision systems allow warehouses to verify packaging quality automatically before goods leave the facility. In this context, Contrinex introduced the Smart Camera 3D for automated fill-level and clearance inspection in distribution and packaging workflows.

Detecting packaging issues before shipment
Distribution centres processing large volumes of parcels must ensure that boxes are packed correctly before palletising and transport. Overfilled boxes, improperly positioned items, or products protruding above the carton edge can compromise stacking stability and expose goods to compression during transport.

Manual inspection is often inconsistent in high-throughput environments. Automated inspection systems address this by verifying internal package conditions in real time within the warehouse automation process.

The Smart Camera 3D applies 3D distance measurement to assess packaging conditions directly on a packaging station or conveyor line. By analysing height profiles and spatial positioning inside the box, the system determines whether products remain within defined fill limits and whether sufficient clearance exists between the contents and the carton edges.

Inline 3D measurement within packaging workflows
The system evaluates predefined inspection zones inside each package. Using integrated 3D sensing, it checks several conditions relevant to packaging integrity:
  • Whether items remain within the allowed fill height
  • Whether products maintain required clearance from box edges
  • Whether contents protrude beyond acceptable limits
Inspection occurs inline and in real time during packaging or conveyor transport. If a packaging error is detected, such as a product extending above the permitted height, the system can trigger an alert or stop the box before it reaches palletising.

Because image processing is performed directly on the camera hardware, the system operates without an external industrial PC, which simplifies integration into existing warehouse automation systems and digital supply chain environments.

Configuration through a no-code vision interface
System configuration is handled through the Smart Vision App, which includes a distance-measurement algorithm designed for packaging inspection tasks.

Operators configure the inspection setup through a graphical interface. Inspection zones are defined directly on a live camera image, and acceptable fill heights and clearance thresholds can be specified for each packaging format.

The interface allows rapid adjustment when switching between different box sizes or product types. For logistics operations handling frequent SKU changes, this approach enables inspection parameters to be modified without programming expertise.

Supporting real-time quality control in logistics
In practical operation, the camera distinguishes between compliant and non-compliant packaging scenarios during the packing process.

If a product extends beyond the permitted fill envelope, the system identifies the condition as a packaging error and prevents the shipment from continuing along the line. Packages that remain within the defined fill level and clearance margins are approved for stacking and transport.

This type of inline inspection contributes to more consistent pallet stacking and reduces the probability of shipping damage in e-commerce and distribution operations. By replacing manual checks with automated verification, warehouses can maintain throughput while ensuring packaging conditions meet transport requirements.
