Norwegian e-commerce apparel retailer VILLOID is deploying an automated warehouse fulfillment system developed by Pio, an AutoStore product line, through integration partner StrongPoint. The implementation integrates automated cube storage technology directly into the retailer's dedicated logistics facility to scale order processing throughput and optimize inventory density.
Operational Scaling in Fashion Logistics
Growing order volumes and the operational requirements of rapid parcel delivery demand high spatial efficiency and inventory accessibility. VILLOID previously utilized shared Pio infrastructure off-site and is transitioning fulfillment directly in-house to accommodate scaling requirements.
Deploying warehouse automation at this scale requires close collaboration between the technology designer and the systems integrator. While AutoStore engineers the underlying cubic storage mechanisms and software platform through Pio, StrongPoint executes the physical systems integration, material handling delivery, and localized operational maintenance.
Technical Architecture of the Cube Storage System
Pio utilizes standardized cubic automated storage and retrieval system technology engineered to operate within constrained footprints. High-density grids stack storage bins vertically without operational access aisles, maximizing cubic space utilization compared to conventional rack-and-shelf layouts.
Autonomous robots travel along an overhead structural grid to retrieve, reorganize, and present targeted inventory bins to operator-facing picking stations. The installation engineered for VILLOID specifies an 80,000-bin grid capacity. This volume represents a fourfold expansion over standard configurations of the platform, delivering higher inventory consolidation and consistent cycle times for fast-moving consumer apparel.
Integration and Industrial Deployment
The physical installation is scheduled for operational completion in the second quarter of 2027 within a newly established logistics facility. StrongPoint manages the end-to-end site engineering, system commissioning, and integration into VILLOID's enterprise warehouse workflows.
The underlying deployment architecture provides flexible hardware and software scaling. This operational structure allows growing commercial retailers to implement standardized robotics automation frameworks without disrupting active supply chain operations.
Strategic Rationale
Technical and operational considerations dictated the direct implementation of the storage grid.
"By bringing the solution in-house, VILLOID is now adding the capacity and flexibility needed for its next stage of growth," stated Dag Morten Meltveit, Vice President of Pio at AutoStore.
VILLOID Chief Executive Officer and Founder Jeanette Dyhre Kvisvik outlined the operational requirements behind the infrastructure investment:
"Logistics with same-day delivery has been a key driver of our growth, helping us meet customers' expectations for fulfillment service. With the new, larger Pio system, we look forward to adding the capacity we need as we scale toward our next milestones."
The completed facility will consolidate the retailer's storage density, reduce human transit times inside the warehouse, and standardize picking performance across peak e-commerce volume cycles.
