Application Area: Intralogistics and Material Handling
Industry Sector: Automotive and Connected Technologies Manufacturing

HARMAN, a developer of connected technologies for automotive, consumer, and enterprise markets, expanded the intralogistics infrastructure at its manufacturing facility in Pécs, Hungary. To accommodate growing production volumes, the plant required a higher-density storage method to link stored components directly with assembly lines. The facility previously utilized vertical lift modules, but rising output demanded a comprehensive modernization plan to expand parts capacity without enlarging the facility footprint.

Operational Challenges in Electronics Assembly
Electronics and automotive manufacturing require rapid access to diverse component inventories under strict schedules. The Pécs plant managed expanding assembly operations where material delivery delays could disrupt assembly throughput. The facility needed to house an expanding inventory within existing square footage, streamline continuous parts replenishment, and maintain complete operational safety during intralogistics retrofitting.

High-Density Grid Integration
To solve these constraints, Kardex engineered a compact automated storage and retrieval grid tailored to the facility. The installation manages approximately 3,000 stock keeping units across 22,500 individual bins. The hardware architecture features 13 automated robots operating on the top grid to retrieve and present bins, supported by three carousel ports and two conveyor ports for ergonomic picking and replenishment. Software coordination is handled through direct integration with the enterprise SAP Extended Warehouse Management system, ensuring real-time inventory visibility and automated order prioritization.

Retrofitting During Active Production
Kardex executed the installation directly inside the active Pécs manufacturing site without interrupting continuous assembly schedules. Phased construction and localized safety protocols allowed plant personnel to sustain regular manufacturing output while technicians assembled the grid framework and integrated digital control loops.

Operational Gains and Logistics Standardization
The completed installation substantially multiplies component storage capacity inside the existing building envelope while accelerating inventory retrieval speeds. Direct warehouse-to-production material flow minimizes transport times, lowers handling errors, and provides the scalability needed for future component volume increases. Based on the performance and deployment execution at the Pécs facility, HARMAN selected Kardex as a global partner to standardize warehouse automation solutions across international manufacturing sites.
