NXP Introduces UCODE X for High-Volume RAIN RFID

NXP Semiconductors has introduced UCODE X, a new RAIN RFID integrated circuit designed to deliver industry-leading read and write sensitivity for high-volume identification and traceability applications. The device is engineered to support smaller RFID labels while maintaining reliable performance in dense, fast-moving operational environments.

UCODE X targets applications such as retail inventory management, logistics, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, and food supply chains, where tagging performance and scalability are critical. By combining high RF sensitivity with flexible memory and configuration options, the chip enables faster encoding, more accurate inventory counts, and improved readability on challenging products, including liquids and packaged goods.

The device is compliant with the GS1 Gen2V2 standard, ensuring interoperability across existing RAIN RFID readers and encoders. It also includes full support for the GS1 G2V2 Untraceable command, allowing data protection features that address consumer privacy requirements.

UCODE X is designed to store key product attributes directly on the chip, such as expiration dates, lot numbers, and recycling information. This capability supports evolving regulatory requirements, including the EU Digital Product Passport and U.S. FSMA 204, by enabling item-level traceability without relying solely on backend systems.

From a system design perspective, the increased sensitivity allows inlay and label suppliers to reduce antenna size and material usage, supporting smaller form factors and lower resource consumption. The chip’s configurable architecture enables adaptation to different operational needs without changes to the physical label design.

According to NXP, UCODE X is manufactured using the company’s hybrid production strategy to balance supply resilience, geographic flexibility, and cost efficiency. The device is intended to support the transition of RAIN RFID from pilot deployments to continuous, large-scale operations across multiple industries.
